Project Scope:

Phase one of a project to upgrade the crushing capacity of the TSB Malelane Mill has been completed on time and within the 5% budget. The two phase initiative will increase Malelane Mill’s capacity from 1.95 million tons of cane per annum in a 42 week crushing season to 2.0 million tons in a shorter 38 week season.

Features:
An automated chemical cleaning plant was installed and the existing evaporator station has been separated into two similarly sized lines. Caustic cleaning now takes place on one line, while juice is boiled on the other. The process is assisted by the 1000m² Kestner evaporator that was installed to facilitate throughput during the slow-crush cleaning days.

Two slat carriers were installed to feed the two diffusers independently, so that mill staff are able to maintain them on a bi-weekly basis. This is also done during the slow crush period. Some valuable lessons were learnt, the most important being the increased management and supervision required when placing contracts with the contractor liable for the design. Close supervision and interaction by the construction manager and discipline engineers ensured that minimal rework took place.

Hi-Tech Piping installed the chemical cleaning plant and evaporator piping, while Telmod Projects carried out the electrical installation. Instrelect (Gauteng) were responsible for the instrumentation installation.
