210Mℓ Vlakfontein Reservoir 3
CLIENT: Rand Water
LOCATION: Benoni, South Africa
Services Provided:
Normal Services, Stage 1: Inception to Stage 4: Documentation and Procurement and Construction Drawings in terms of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) Guideline Scope of Services.
Construction Monitoring by the APP and Structural Design Engineer in terms of requirements of Dam Safety Legislation and for Bosch Projects in terms of the Labour Act Regulations, as Design Engineers and to respond to design queries during the construction phase.
Project Scope:
Features:
The reservoir, which will store 210 Mℓ of potable water, is circular in shape. The wall is 11,8 m high and tapers from a thickness of 1 100 mm at the base to 300 mm at the top. It has an internal diameter of 154 m with 272 round reinforced concrete columns, 600 mm diameter, to support the roof slab.
The size of the reservoir is such that it has been classified by the Department of Water and Sanitation Dam Safety Office as a dam with a significant hazard rating, which requires stringent monitoring during the construction phase. The reservoir will also be the largest post-tensioned circular reservoir in South Africa.
Construction, which is being undertaken through a joint venture between WBHO Construction, ANZI Plant and Mining Services and the Motheo Construction Group, commenced during May 2020 and was scheduled to be complete by April 2023. Current challenges with Eskom load shedding are limiting Rand Water’s ability to supply the contractor with water for testing. The reservoir is substantially complete and it is anticipated that the water supply challenge will be resolved during April this year, allowing the reservoir to be complete by November 2023.
