Sumitomo Rubber: Factory Expansion

Project Scope:
- Sumitomo Rubber South Africa (SRSA) owns and operates a tyre production facility at Ladysmith, in the Republic of South Africa. The Ladysmith plant was producing about 9 600 tyres a day and has capacity for 10 500 tyres a day. The plant upgrade to 12,200 tyres a day by 2016 and 14,500 tyres a day by 2017 requires the construction of 32,000m² additional factory space, with a total estimated project value of 1.1 Billion Rand.The additional factory space consists of extensions to the current factory structures as well as additional staff infrastructure such as offices, change rooms and laboratories. The increased production also being facilitated by an upgrade and expansion of the factory electrical infrastructure from the 132KV municipal feed to the 11kV internal reticulation.Bosch Projects were appointed by SRSA to provide Architectural, Civil & Structural, and Electrical Consulting Engineering Services.
Features:
- The factory expansion involves the construction of a new state of the art production line which adjoins onto the existing factory originally built in the 1970’s. The new production line is being constructed to Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) standards, with oversight from the SRI head office in Kobe, Japan. The expansion involves the construction of 15 new buildings split over 3 phases. Construction started in October 2014 and completion was in April 2017.
