Kitungule Irrigation Development

TYPE OF CONTRACT: Professional Engineering and Project Management Services (EPCM)
Services Provided:
- Reconnaissance and detailed feasibility studies (2017/18)
- Irrigation masterplanning with regards to estate layout, irrigation layout, irrigation primary drainage, haulage and estate roads.
- Detailed engineering design for irrigation systems, pump stations, pipelines, overhead transmission lines and irrigation balancing dams.
- Irrigation design and bulk distribution network and primary drainage.
Project Scope:
- Optimizing Bulk and infield water requirements taking into account harvesting strategy.
- Overall design of Phases 3 & 4
- Ph.3 - 6 600ha of centre-pivot and 2 450 ha of outfall area.
- Ph.4 - 3 050ha of centre-pivot and 1 235 ha of outfall area.
- Design of irrigation systems, river and infield pump stations, as well as balancing dams in strategic places and associated bulk rising mains.
- Upgrading of the electrical infrastructure where required and design of new overhead lines.
- Roads & Drainage Layouts
Features:
- Six (6) river pump stations with total bulk capacity of 22 425 m3/hr (Ph3) and 30 295 m3/hr (Ph4).
- Nine (9) infield pump stations with total capacity of 29 000 m3/hr.
- Five (5) balancing dams with a storage capacity of 350 000 m3.
- Bulk Pipelines and Irrigation networks, including use of steel and GRP pipe 500mmØ to 1 500mmØ diameter (52 000m), and HDPE pipe 110mmØ – 400mmØ (113 300m)
- Primary drainage layout for the irrigation estate.
- Detailed design of the primary drains and outfalls.
- Upgrading of 11kV line to 33kV line.
- New 33kV line.
The project was broken down into two phases:
Phase 3: 123 pivots – 15 ha to 75 ha (avg. size 55ha)
Phase 4: 61 pivots – 15 ha to 65 ha (avg. size 50ha)
The irrigation system was designed to supply the following:
- Peak monthly nett irrigation requirement:197mm.
- Daily gross irrigation requirement for centre pivot @85% efficiency = 6.2 mm/day.
